03 – 09 December – By trade, I am a cabinet maker of 35 years. However, in 2023, I had an urge to try and paint. If I say I am self taught, I mean I have had no classes, I work it out as I go. For me painting is a catharsis. Time taken in a busy life in between jobs. I paint on old wooden panels or board because my painting started in the workshop, in between jobs gluing up or something drying. I was drawn in by oils, and used a knife to try local scenes or landscapes. Recently I have started using acrylics and find myself leaning in to more abstraction. I am sure like many artists, translating what is in my head onto a board, is the challenge I wrestle. Wanting bold joyful colour but also the softer gradation of nature. Using colour and line to try and capture acrealistic representation or using colour and form to capture the essence of something more intangible. I don’t really know if my exhibition should be a clear presentation of a definite style. What I am presenting is an eclectic mix of places and ‘things’ that inspired me to paint. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for looking. For now, Oliver
