17 – 23 December – Welcome to Alexithymia, an intimate collection of paintings that explore trapped moods, emotions and feelings found in nature, revealing an unconscious connection between the painter’s internal state and the natural landscapes of Kent. Monica Martinez is a contemporary tonalist oil painter residing in London and Whitstable. An accidental artist, her creative journey began shortly after starting ADHD treatment in 2023. Finding it challenging to understand and express her feelings, she draws inspiration from her appreciation of beauty in rural and coastal scenes, particularly those featuring dramatic clouds and evocative light, often finding or reflecting her own moods within them. Through strong horizontal compositions and a style marked by visible, energetic brush strokes blended with subtle transitions of color and light, her work invites self-reflection. She emphasizes light and atmosphere, capturing tranquil, observational moments that evoke a sense of presence within the landscape. Enchanted by the light and clouds of Whitstable and overcoming prior feelings of rejection and low self-esteem stemming from incomplete art courses, Martinez experienced a compelling urge to draw and paint at the end of 2023. Driven by a need for creative expression to counter workplace anxiety and repression, she embraced her artistic impulse, disregarding external judgment and her own self-criticism, and finding peace and acceptance.
