Jon Bird Open Competition 2022
The Fishslab Gallery are delighted to announce the return of the Jon Bird competition in the Fishslab Gallery from 19th January 2022. Jon was a much-loved, local artist who was instrumental in establishing the Fishslab Gallery as a much-needed community art space and many years later the gallery is just as popular as ever. Sadly the competition had to be cancelled for the last 2 years and we are very much looking forward to seeing what wonderful submissions we receive this year.
The Jon Bird competition welcomes submissions from all artists working in any medium, regardless of location, background and at any stage of their career. This year, for the first time, we are also encouraging entries from under 21s as well. We hope that our younger creatives will embrace the opportunity to participate.
Details on entry fees, prizes and specifications on size of work can be found below together with an application form to enable you to enter and details of how to pay your entry fee.
Applications close on 24th December, shortlisting will be completed by 11th January and those who have been successful will be asked to bring their work to the gallery ahead of the competition opening on 19th January.
We accept up to a maximum of 3 entries per artist, the costs of entry are set out below. Please note, not everyone will be shortlisted and artists who are shortlisted can only have one piece taken forward to the final judging.
Entry fees and prizes
Entry fees will be as follows:
- Over 21s – £10 per entry, 3 entries for £25. Maximum 3 entries, only 1 piece may be chosen.
- Under 21s – £5 per entry, 3 entries for £12.50. Maximum 3 entries, only 1 piece may be chosen.

- Under 21s – first prize £50 of art vouchers, second prize £25 of art vouchers
- People’s choice – in each category we will award a People’s Choice prize of £50 of art vouchers based on votes cast by visitors to the Fishslab Gallery.
Shortlisting and final selection
A panel consisting of volunteer committee members from the Fishslab Gallery will undertake shortlisting. Each selector on the panel views the artworks anonymously, as does the final judge who will award the prizes. The winning selection will be made by an independent judge who has no connection to the Fishslab Gallery or the committee.
Size limitations on pieces of artwork
Although we accept entries across all media (ie not just painting, photography) we do have to realise the limitations of the gallery and our desire to include as much work as possible. To assist with this we would ask that no hanging artwork is submitted that is larger than 150cm square. Sculpture should be 200cm high by 100cm deep. For any artists wishing to submit larger pieces than this, or those who would like to submit floor standing sculpture etc. please contact us at email@example.com to discuss whether these can be accommodated before you make an entry.
In order to apply we require a completed application form with jpegs of artworks. Jpegs should be no more than 1MB in size and should be clear and well lit. An application fee in line with the information above should be made payment to the Fishslab Gallery, Lloyds Bank, Sort Code 30 90 09, Account no 42489060. Please give your name as your payment reference.
Shortlisted artists are responsible for the costs of delivery of their work to the gallery and insurance of the artwork while it is on the premises. The Fishslab Gallery takes no responsibility for any damage to artworks while on the gallery premises.
